Monday with…Martin Luther King Jr.

Posted on Monday, February 1st, 2010 by Ali Johnson

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches. This quote was on my mentors door and I use to read it everyday. I have wondered for a long time how MLK handle himself with such dignity in the face of such injustice. “When evil men plot, good men must plan. ...

Book Review- Brennan Manning, A Glimpse of Jesus: the Stranger to Self Hatred

Posted on Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 by Ali Johnson

This book is a gem, 145 pages of pure love, trust, gratitude and faith in Jesus. I was struck by how much this book spoke into my life when I read it. It gives you a glimpse of Jesus’ heart and his pure, rentless love towards His people. This book defines self-hatred as the reason that so many Christian struggle with the constant unrelenting love of Abba. By clearly understanding and grappling with the life and teachings of Jesus we can understand and grapple with the real and true saviour. And then be truly changed and transformed. In the astonishing chapter entitled ‘Jesus: The Stranger to Self-Hatred’ we see Manning grapple with ...

Fakebook: How Many Friends Have You Really Got?

Posted on Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 by Ali Johnson

Five minutes goes by and I get out my Iphone, open up my Facebook app and check if I have any new wall posts, hoping that someone has sent me a message or ‘liked’ my status. What did I do before Facebook? How did I stay in contact with my friends before I had them all at the click of a mouse or the tap of the keyboard? Have you ever missed an event or not turned up to something because it wasn’t on Facebook. I even rely on Facebook to tell me when my families’ birthdays are. Social networking sites like Facebook have changed the way we live our lives. ...

Postsecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God

Posted on Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 by Ali Johnson

I read a book a while ago called "The Death of Outrage" by William Bennet. In it he discusses the impact of Bill Clinton and the failings in his morality, politics and  character. I was struck by this book, because as leaders we have choices to make. He says  "The accomplishment of Bill Clinton is that he has made the country into one large lawyer-joke. Clinton has marked off the record of an incorrigible liar, faithless to his wife, who cannot be trusted to honor any law beyond his own interest”and the public says, “yes, but what is the problem?” (129). By the choices we as leaders make as an impact ...

Why 2009 was Facebook’s year

Posted on Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 by Ali Johnson

I was reading an article in the guardian entitled "Why 2009 was Facebook Year" and lead to me consider the impact facebook is having on my relationships. Even by Facebook's standards, the past 12 months have been remarkable. The site cemented its position as the world's favourite social network, reached the verge of profitability and even exerted its influence over the race for the Christmas No.1. With the astonishing landmark of 500 million users now in sight, internet insiders suggest that the pressure may bring more headaches to Facebook's 25-year-old founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and his team. "It's definitely an interesting time," said ...

Pepsi to Skip Super Bowl Ads in Favor of $20M Social Media Campaign

Posted on Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 by Ali Johnson

Pepsi have decided this to replace their usually great and iconic Super Bowl ads for a $20M advert campaign. This is a very interesting change of tack and a wonderful example of the changing nature of the world and that social networking isn't a flash in the pan but is her to stay.

pepsiThis is an interesting strategy, especially for a company that continues to spend much of its advertising budget on television. Like other social media campaigns, execution is key. If Pepsi can ...
